Frequently Asked Questions
Explosion proof is the general term for all protection methods that stop electrical equipment from igniting an explosive atmosphere. These include flameproof (Ex d), increased safety (Ex e), intrinsic safety (Ex i), pressurization (Ex p), encapsulation (Ex m), oil immersion (Ex o) and powder filling (Ex q). Flameproof is one of these methods: the equipment is housed in a strong enclosure that can withstand an internal explosion and prevents flames or hot gases from escaping to the surrounding atmosphere.
Flameproof certification is an official approval confirming that electrical equipment has been designed and tested to IS/IEC 60079-1 so it will not ignite the surrounding explosive atmosphere. In India, flameproof equipment for hazardous areas typically requires testing by a recognised laboratory (such as CIMFR) and approval from PESO. Flameproof (Ex d) equipment is generally used in Zone 1 and Zone 2.
Not exactly. Intrinsic safety (Ex i) is one type of explosion protection. It limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so it is too low to cause ignition, even if a fault occurs. Explosion proof is the umbrella term that covers intrinsic safety, flameproof and the other protection methods.
IS/IEC standards classify hazardous area equipment by group rather than "class." Group I is for underground mines with firedamp (methane). Group II is for surface areas with explosive gases, divided into IIA, IIB and IIC, where IIC (for example hydrogen and acetylene) is the most demanding. Group III is for combustible dusts. Hazardous areas are divided into Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gases and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dusts. The "Class and Division" system is the North American equivalent.
Flameproof electrical equipment is used in hazardous areas where explosive gases, vapours or dusts may be present, such as oil and gas, refineries, petrochemical, chemical and pharmaceutical plants, fertilizer plants, ships and tankers, mining and metal processing, wastewater treatment and power generation. It is selected according to the zone, gas group and temperature class of the location.
A fixture is flameproof when its enclosure is strong enough to contain an explosion inside it, and its joints (flame paths) are machined to tight gaps and lengths so that escaping gases are cooled below ignition temperature. Its outer surface temperature must also stay below the ignition temperature of the surrounding gas (its T-class). Flameproof fixtures are often combined with increased safety (Ex e) terminal chambers.
